How an NHS Trust is Transforming Outpatient Gynaecology
Recognised as a Hysteroscopic Centre of Excellence, the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is leading the way in outpatient gynaecology through its partnership with Hologic.
The team at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust performs 45 to 50 MyoSure procedures weekly, which is made possible through the adoption of Hologic’s Gynae-Surgical Solutions Portfolio, including MyoSure® and the Fluent® Fluid Management System.
Dr Olivia Barney, Consultant Gynaecologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, highlighted how the outpatient model has changed and improved the patient journey.

"As a result of the Fluent Fluid Management System, we were able to increase our clinic productivity from four patients to five in a clinic. We have fewer two-stage procedures or abandoned procedures due to poor visibility."
By moving complex cases out of the theatre, the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has not only improved service efficiency but also ensured patient-centred care. This shift in approach has led to formal recognition as a Hologic Hysteroscopic Centre of Excellence.
At the core of this transformation is Hologic’s Hysteroscopy Suite, which consists of the MyoSure tissue removal suite. This system is designed to offer safe and efficient resection of uterine pathology under direct vision. Complementary to MyoSure, Hologic’s Fluent Fluid Management System ensures stable pressure and clear visualisation throughout each procedure.
With full utilisation of the Hologic Hysteroscopy Suite, the clinic has seen a considerable uplift in productivity, with fewer interruptions during procedures.
Additionally, many women who have comparable procedures in theatre often need an overnight stay in the hospital. This is eliminated with an outpatient ambulatory approach, decreasing the time the patient needs to spend in hospital recovery, freeing up bed space and physicians and nurses who would be required for theatre recovery.
In effect, not only does it benefit the patient, but it also benefits the staff and workflow of the hospital too. With ongoing support from Hologic, staff have grown in confidence thanks to structured training and simulation workshops to build confidence in each procedure.
As a newly recognised Centre of Excellence, the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is now encouraging other outpatient hysteroscopy units to visit and see the model in action.
